Volunteer Dog Handling Workshops

Date: 20 October 2012 10:00 to 12:00
Details:

Each Saturday, LHS hosts two dog walking classes for volunteers.

White-Card Dog Handling Workshop - Taking this class is the first step in volunteering with to handle the LHS dogs. This class is held every Saturday at 11am at LHS. In this workshop, taught by a team captain, you will learn basic dog body language, elementary handling rules and techniques, and procedures for taking dogs in/out of their cages. Successful completion of this makes you a white level dog handler. Within a month of your white-card workshop (and in as little as one week), you are expected to perform 8 hours of white-card dog walking before proceeding to step 3.

Green-Card Handling Workshop - Volunteers may take this workshop after completing the steps to advance beyond handling white-card dogs. This class is held every Saturday at 10am at LHS. The training class is taught by a team captain. The captain, now your mentor, will collect your white-card verified hours sheet. During the class, you will be assigned a dog to handle and you will be taught to train that dog in basic commands such as name recognition, sit, down, and touch. This class will teach you to reinforce positive behavior when you are out with the dogs, which will in turn make the dogs more adoptable.
