LHS' First Canine Good Citizen

September 21st was an important day for Liberty Humane Society and for our resident dog Sweets. At our 2008 Bark in the Park, the first dog still residing at LHS took and PASSSED her Canine Good Citizen test!

September 21st marked not only LHS' annual Bark in the Park fundraiser, but also an important first in the organization's progression. For many weeks, volunteers Elise Linden, Judy Eckerstrom, and Corinne Babich worked tirelessly to prepare a nine year old pit bull, named Sweets, for an important test. After a life of overbreeding, neglect, and abuse, Sweets found a home at Liberty Humane Society. Many shelters might have deemed her unadoptable - a senior dog in poor physical condition with dog aggression issues, but we saw her potential. Surrendered in February of this year, Sweets' wonderful demeanor and eagerness to make friends with everyone she meets had everyone talking about her natural ability to make people feel good. After months of looking for a home to no avail, and seeing how at home Sweets had become, the staff made the decision to keep Sweets permanently at the shelter (another LHS first!).

Sweets isn't going to live the life of a free loader though. We have big plans for her to work within our new pet therapy program. On September 21st the work of those volunteers paid off when Sweets became the first Liberty Humane Society dog to recieve the AKC (American Kennel Club) Canine Good Citizen designation while living at the shelter. With Sweets are our first, LHS currently has two more dogs being prepared to take the CGC test within the upcoming weeks. These dogs and the work of our volunteers are not only testaments to how amazing shelter dogs can be but to the progress LHS has made as an organization.
