Out of Shelter Volunteering
Foster Caregiver
We often need families or individuals that are willing to offer their home on a temporary basis for animals in need. Foster care is most frequently needed for shelter animals that:
- Are too young to be adopted, such as orphaned kittens or mothers who are nursing.
- Need special care until they are well enough to be adopted.
- Need socialization and training for adoption.
We also look for temporary homes for those animals that have been at the shelter a long time and need a break from the shelter environment.

Adoption and Foster Home Follow-up Calls
We are often in need of volunteers to help us call people and check up on lost and found animals, animals currently in foster homes, and ask past adopters about their experience at our shelter. These phone calls are made during office hours, but perhaps most useful after hours and over the weekend.
Off-Site Adoptions
The Liberty Humane Society visit various sites around the county where cats and dogs from both foster and shelter care are up for adoption. Adoption events are completely organized and run by volunteers who help setup and take down tables, cages, and assist potential adopters with the animals.
Transportation
We often need volunteers to help us transport animals to and from the veterinarian for spaying and neutering as well as other medical issues. We also need volunteers who can provide transportation for animals that have been accepted to a rescue group.
Cat Trap and Release Program
In an effort to reduce the cat population, the Liberty Humane Society has a program where cats are trapped, neutered or spayed, and returned to their home. Specially trained volunteers can help with this program by setting traps in designated problem areas and regularly checking on traps.
