3. Support Comes from Throughout the Country After Hurricane Sandy
When Hurricane Sandy rocked the Northeast this past October, no one had anticipated the level of flooding and wind damage that it was going to bring with it. The main building to LHS was thankfully unharmed, however, we were left without power for eight long days and sustained damage to the outdoor dog run roof as well as complete destruction of a storage shed. Despite these hardships, LHS trekked out into the community during this time to transport free pet food to residents temporarily living in shelters throughout the city.
It was the generosity of others that puts Hurricane Sandy on our list of top ten moments for the year. The outpouring of support LHS received immediately after the storm came from far and wide in the form of monetary donations to fix the damage and in-kind donations to help LHS get by when our traditional supply lines were down. One of the most touching donations was made by a grade-school Girl Scout Troop from South Dakota who banded together to raise money and send us items off of the Amazon Wish List. Truly amazing to see such generosity from a group that has never even visited our facility!
We also have to take this time to thank national organizations like Best Friends, ASPCA, and Petfinder Charities that provided disaster relief grants to help us fix damages and replace refrigerated medical supplies. Another big thank you goes out to Wag.com, Petsmart Charities, Purina, and Hartz Corporation for sending truck-fulls of donated food for the LHS animals and those displaced in our community.
