9. Iggy: A Young Dog Facing Some Tough Challenges
At the age of one, Iggy was in a position no young dog would want to be in. He was found by Jersey City Animal Control just after Christmas in 2010 completely covered in mange. LHS began treatment immediately, which still took months to overcome because the damage had been so severe.
Upon his initial behavioral evaluation, we also learned that Iggy was a food guarder and a leash bitter. While these issues weren’t severe, this trait didn’t make him an ideal candidate for many adopters and required that he only be handled by experienced volunteers.
Throughout Iggy’s six months at LHS, Sarah Dawson, LHS’s Medical Supervisor, worked with him every single day to treat both his medical and behavioral issues. Iggy not only overcame his issues, but he also became an expert in a variety of tricks such as touch, sit, stay, rollover, and drop-it.
On June 7th, Iggy finally found his forever family! Coming all the way from Staten Island, Iggy’s new family fell in love with him immediately. They were fully aware of Iggy’s past issues and were able to look past that to see the happy-go-lucky little guy that LHS staff and volunteers had grown to love. From time to time, we still get happy tails pics of Iggy and his new family. Not only has he filled out nicely, but they’ve also fueled Iggy’s desire to learn by teaching him new tricks like jumping through hula hoops!
