Volunteers Under 14

Although volunteers need to be 14 years old to help at the shelter, there are still many ways that children under the age of 14 can help the animals of the Liberty Humane Society! Below are some ideas on how children can help Jersey City's homeless animals without doing hands on work at the shelter:

-Donation Drive - LHS is always in need of items off of our wish list such as bleach, paper towels, dry dog and cat food, wet cat food, toys for the dogs and cats, old linens and newspaper. Children can set up a collection box at their school, church or synagogue. They can also sit outside a store (pet store, supermarket or any other store that sells pet items) and A cute, big eared and curious pitbull puppy sitting on the stairs outside.hand customers our wish list on their way inside the store. People can buy items for LHS and drop them off on the way out of the store. Make sure you get permission from the store manager before doing this. Tell the managers that it will help boost their sales that day!

-Car Wash - host a car wash at your school or in your neighborhood and donated the proceeds to LHS. Make some fun posters with pictures of our adoptable animals on them to attract attention to your car wash!

-Bake or craft sale - bake items or make craft items to sell in your neighborhood or at a local craft fair and donate the proceeds to LHS!

-Ask your friends to buy gifts for the shelter instead of gifts for you for your birthday - many children have asked their friends to buy presents for the shelter animals instead of them for their birthday. This is a nice and selfless way to show the shelter animals how much you care for and love them! Please see our wish list of items your friends can buy!

-Make pet centerpieces for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah or your Sweet 16 Party - some great and thoughtful kids have made baskets filled with pet items for the centerpieces at their Bar/Bat Mitzvah or their Sweet 16 party and then donated those baskets to LHS. These centerpieces will last much longer than flowers and will go to a great cause!

-Make homemade toys or blankets for the animals at the shelter - this is a great way to earn a badge for your Brownie, Girl Scout or Cub Scout troop! If you can knit or sew you could make small, soft beds for the animals to sleep on while they waiting to get adopted at the shelter.

Before dropping off any donations to LHS, please call ahead or contact Allison at allison@libertyhumane.org. When you (or your child!) drop off donations to LHS we will give them a tour, a certificate of appreciation and the opportunity to pet a friendly cat or dog that is up for adoption!
